What is an acronym?

An acronym is a word formed by combining parts of two words, or an acronym that is pronounced like a word and is commonly used as such. Let's understand it better with two examples:

Difference between acronym and acronym

But not all acronyms are acronyms. For an acronym to become an acronym, it must be read as a word, and must be words in common use. Let's continue with the example from before: OVNI stopped being the acronym for Unidentified Flying Object, to become a word in itself, and be written as such: OVNI

But other acronyms in common use, such as DNA or DNI are not acronyms, because each letter must be read separately.

How are acronyms formed?

Acronyms can be made up of two nouns, such as motel, from the English motor and hotel. Or they can be made up of a noun and an adjective, like computing. They can also arise from the union of two adjectives: portuñol, from Portuguese and Spanish.

From the grammatical and spelling point of view, the acronyms follow the rules of the Spanish language regarding the formation of the plural (ufo-ufnis) and accentuation (laser). As for the gender, it is usually that of its main element. In the case of acronyms from acronyms, being for all intents and purposes common words, they are no longer written in capital letters (like acronyms). They only keep the initial capital letter in the case of names of institutions or organizations (Unesco, Unicef)
