Overview

Iowa was named after the Iowa Indians and in 1846 became the 29th state in the United States. In memory of the Indian chief Black Hawk, Iowa is also known as “Hawkeye State”. He was a leader of the Sac tribe who were relocated to Iowa. With its prairie landscape, Iowa is considered a typical state of the Midwest.
