Overview
The name Massachusetts comes from an Indian tribe of the region and means “place of a big hill”, it was founded in 1629 by British Puritans as Massachusetts Bay Colony and is nicknamed “Bay State” until today. Massachusetts is one of the six former New England states. He was one of the first 13 states to form the Union and became a member of the United States on February 17, 1788, and Massachusetts was the first state in the United States to recognize same-sex marriage.
The state covers an area of around 27,336 km² – with a population of around 6.5 million. Around 82% of them are white, around 5% are colored and 7% are Latinos. The capital is Boston with around 560,000 inhabitants. The famous Havard Universities and MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) form one of the largest centers for culture, education, medicine and research in the United States. Numerous historic sites in Massachusetts date back to the time of the Pilgrim Fathers and the War of Independence. The capital city of Boston, for example, was the setting for the so-called “Boston Tea Party”, when angry citizens, in protest against the English tax and customs policies, stormed three ships and threw their tea loads into the water.
Massachusetts is also known for its baseball team “Boston Red Sox”, the delicious mussel soup “Chowder” and the miles of beaches on Cape Cod. In 2010 a very conservative movement was launched throughout the USA under this name “Boston Tea Party” which has a significant impact on Republican politics.
Cities and larger towns
Boston
With around 600,000 inhabitants, Boston is the capital of the state of Massachusetts and one of the oldest cities in the United States. Historically, Boston has a central place in US history. Numerous battles of independence were fought here, at the Boston Tea Party angry colonists attacked 3 British merchant ships due to a new import tariff on tea, and the first subway in the United States traversed the city in Boston. But Boston cannot only boast of its past. Nowadays, Boston is a center for students from all over the world, driven by the famous Harvard University and a paradise for baseball fans of the Boston Red Sox, which is based here.
If you are in Boston, you should start your city visit at Boston Common, the park in the heart of the city, because this is where the Freedom Trail begins, a historic walking path that leads past Boston’s main attractions such as the State House, Old South Meeting House of Faneuil Hall and the Bunker Hill Monument. If you prefer to go shopping, you should definitely visit Newbury Street or a market in Copley Square or Haymarket. You can experience Boston from above at the John Hancock Building, local sports enthusiasts in Fenyway Park, the Redsox Stadium, art lovers in the Museum of Fine Arts, families with their children on the Charles River.
Chatham
Chatham is considered a noble place in Cape Cod. Not only are there high-end pensions, but also exclusive shops. Nevertheless, you can experience a lot here without spending a lot of money, such as Chatham Fish Pier on Shore Road, where you can watch fishermen at work or go for a walk on Lighthouse Beach. If you want to strengthen yourself, the Pub Chatham Squire invites you.
Concord & Lexington
The Battle of the Independence War once took place in Lexington, northwest of Boston. However, the American militia subsequently brought the British their first defeat in Concord. The visitor can understand what is happening along the Battle Road Trail. Years later, more precisely in the 19th century, Concord was the center of a literary community, which can still be seen from the numerous homes of old writers. Examples include Hawthorne’s Old Manse House, Emerson House and Alcott’s Orchard House.
Great Barrington
Great Barrington is located in the hilly Berkshires and is known by connoisseurs as a place for excellent restaurants. Not only in the evening is it good to eat well in one of the country-specific restaurants, in the morning and during the day numerous cafes and bakeries are lined up along Main Street and Railroad Street in the center of Great Barrington.
Hyannis
Hyannis is often visited to take a ferry from here to Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard. In addition, the place is also the commercial center of Cape Cod and for a long time served as the Kennedy’s summer residence, which is honored with a museum on site.
Lenox
In the middle of the beautiful Berkshires lies Lenox, an extremely cultural city. Not only the famous Tanglewood Festival takes place here, the Shakespeare & Company spoils people with plays in the summer. Those who prefer to watch a dance performance will be thrilled by the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival.
Northampton
If you love Provincetown, you will also like Northampton, because the city is also characterized by a lively street scene, a lesbian community, great “in” restaurants and a diverse nightlife. You can easily walk through the center, past extraordinary shops, cafes and exhibitions. Also located in Northampton is Smith College, which can score with its museum, the Smith College Art Museum.
Plymouth
Plymouth is the place where the first pilgrims reached America. Today the town celebrates its reputation as the first European settlement and pays tribute to the arrival of the men with the so-called “Plymouth Rock”, a granite rock at the harbor, which is however so small that some have to look twice to see it. Much more interesting is the surrounding Plimoth Plantation, a village that is supposed to remember the time of the first pilgrims.
Provincetown
At the extreme point of Cape Cod you come across the free-spirited and lively town of Provincetown, also known as Ptown. The city is characterized on the one hand by cabaret shows, a broad art scene that was launched many years ago by autonomous artists, a large gay and lesbian scene, and on the other hand, due to its location, dunes, beaches and the opportunity to take part in an election observation tour. Commercial Street is located along the bank; here you will find many galleries, restaurants and small shops.
Salem
Located northeast of Boston, the place has a sad history. In 1692 many people died in a witch hunt. Today the Witch Trials Memorial commemorates past events. However, Salem is also an old seafaring town that did a lot of trade with China. You can find out more about this in the local museum.
Sandwich
Once famous for its glass blowing art, Sandwich is still the oldest town on the Cape Cod peninsula. In addition to the pretty swan pond in Sandwiches Mitte, the Dexter Grist Mill Mill and the Hoxie House, which was the first to be built in the town, are also worth seeing. You can also visit the Thornton W. Burgess Museum, which was named after the sandwich children’s author. The surrounding Sandy Neck Beach and the bike path along the Cape Cod Canal invite you to do some sporting activities.
Stockbridge
Stockbridge may seem like a New England picture book town from the past, because traffic lights don’t even work here. As you stroll through the city, you are reminded of the artist Norman Rockwell, who is honored here with a museum.
Wellfleet
Wellfleet is located on the Cape Cod Peninsula and is famous for its oysters. But not only gourmets can be happy here; Art galleries and the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater provide a cultural offering. If you want to relax after shopping, such as on the Wellfleet Fleamarket, the surrounding beaches, such as Marconi Beach, are ideal.
Worcester
With around 175,000 residents, Worcester is the second largest city in Massachusetts and was considered particularly rich in the 19th century due to various businesses that no longer exist in the form today. Nevertheless, the city can score with an extensive range of museums.
