What are the abbreviation rules?
For the abbreviation of words contained in the names of objects, you
should preferably use the rule defined in the document “Brazilian
Government – Electronic Government Executive Committee – Data
Standards Catalog” contained in the bibliography. The rules contained in
this document are as follows:
- give preference to:
- acronym and abbreviations must be at least 2 characters long;
- the abbreviation must be no more than two thirds of the size of
the original word;
- only those with a total of more than 8 characters can be
abbreviated;
- if the word, term, or name does not have a known
acronym/acronym, use the guidelines below to construct the
abbreviation:
- prepositions should not be used, and if you need to use verbs,
use the present tense;
- whenever possible, avoid the use of abbreviations/acronyms, as
they impair understanding;
- abbreviations commonly used in Portuguese to business
abbreviations;
- business abbreviations for information technology terms;
- terms of information technology to the creation of new ones;
- create abbreviations avoiding ambiguity;
- rule of thumb for creating new abbreviations for word:
- write the first syllable and the first letter of the second
syllable, eg grammar=gram; portuguese=port; numeral=num;
- if the second syllable starts with two consonants, write both,
eg construction=constr; secretary=secret;
- if the resulting abbreviation matches an existing one or
suggests ambiguity, write the full second syllable and include the
first letter of the third syllable, eg professional=profiss;
- any new abbreviations must be submitted to AD.
