and slang on the internet!
As in Portuguese, there are also many abbreviations and slang in
English. It is very common to find them in texts on social networks on
the internet and during informal conversation with people from other
countries. If you want to understand a little about the informality and
the daily communication of Americans, Canadians, British etc, follow our
article.
Today, we brought you the main abbreviations and slang in English.
Don't be in doubt anymore and learn how to use it, how to be part of the

What are abbreviations and slang?
Abbreviations are ways of writing shortening words, in more formal
language it is common to indicate it with a period, for example, adj.
(adjective) and max. (maximum). But they are even more common during
conversations on WhatsApp, for example, when we use “vc” (you), “tbm”
(too) and “pvt” (private).
Slang, on the other hand, is a linguistic phenomenon that occurs
within specific groups in society, but that can be adopted by everyone
depending on the degree of acceptance. For example, “speaking out” is
slang for saying that someone has gossiped and is very common.
Thus, there are always new terms that have become popular on the
internet, such as “biscuitteiro” (people who want attention), “sextou”
(celebration of the arrival of Friday), “contatinho” (person with whom
they have fun without commitment) and even “hi, gone” (a sign of
flirting).

Do not get confused with the abbreviation: ie versus eg
Both ie and eg are two widely used abbreviations in professional
documents, so it is very important that you know them well. However,
they are often confused with each other or used incorrectly. We teach
you its secrets.
ie = id est = "this is"
This abbreviation is used to introduce explanations or descriptions.
To remind yourself, you can think of i as the initial for in essence
or in other words. Use it to expand on, explain, or describe
what you just said. For example:
The giraffe is a mammal (ie a warm-blooded animal that drinks its
mother's milk when young). The giraffe is a mammal (in other words,
a warm-blooded animal that drinks its mother's milk when young).
I went to my least favorite place, ie the dentist. I went to
the place I least like, that is, to the dentist.
eg= exempli gratia = "for example"
This abbreviation is equivalent to Spanish e.g. To memorize it,
remember that it begins with the e of example. As in Spanish,
we use eg to introduce one or more examples.
Please, buy some fruit, eg carrots.
I love eighties rock bands, eg Guns and Roses.
In both cases, and for all abbreviations in general, you should not
write them in bold or italics. They are just another part of everyday
English and as such do not need special treatment.
