English Slang for the Internet: Survival Guide

There are many people learning English via the Internet. There's nothing better than making new friends and learning a new language. I confess that most of my knowledge of English was obtained in conversations with Brazilian and American friends through chat.

As most of you already know, in an Internet chat it is common to use slang and abbreviations. So you don't get lost the next time you talk to a foreigner, below is a list of the most used slang and abbreviations.

• AFAIK= from the English “As Far As I Know”. Translation – As far as I know
• AFK= from English “Away From The Keyboard”. Translation – Away from the computer
• AKA= “Also Known As” – Also known as
• ASAP= from the English “As Soon As Possible”. Translation – As soon as possible
• ASL= from English Age, Sex, Location. Translation – Age, Sex, Location
• BBL= from the English “Be back later”. Translation – I'll be back later !
• BBS= from the English “Be Back in a Second”. Translation – I'll be back in a second!
• BCNU= from the English “Be Seeing You”. Translation – See you soon
• BFN= from English “Bye, for now”. Translation – Goodbye, see you later
• BRB= from the English “Be Right Back”. Translation – I'll be right back!
• BTW= from the English “By The Way”. Translation - By the way, By the way, &c.
• CU= from English see you [later]. Translation – see you [more] soon.
• CYA= Same as CU
• FAQ= Frequently Answered Questions. Translation – Answers to frequently asked questions.
• FYI= “For Your Information” Translation – For Your Information
• GTG, G2G = from the English “Got to go”. Translation – I have to go
• HTH= from the English “Hope This Help”. Translation – Hope this helps
• IAE= from the English “In Any Event”. Translation – Anyway, In Any Event
• IMHO= from English “In My Humble Opinion”. Translation – In my humble opinion
• IMO= from the English “In My Opinion”. Translation – In my opinion
• IRC= It is the abbreviation of “Internet Relay Chat”
• KINDA= From the English “Kind of” adv. somewhat, a bit, moderately (slang), a little
• LOL= Abbreviation of the English “Loughing Out Loud”, which in Portuguese can be translated as “Laughing Out Loud”
• MOFO= from the English Mother Fucker. Translation – Motherfucker.
• MORF= from English Male Or Female. Translation – Male or Female?, are you male or female?
• NFW= from English “No Fucking Way”. Translation – Not even thinking about it, no way!
• NP= from English “No Problem”. Translation – No problem!
• NRN= from the English “No Reply Necessary”. Translation – No response required
• OIC= from English “Oh I See”. Translation – oh yeah, got it
• OMG= from the English “Oh My God”. Translation – Oh My God
• OTOH= from English “On The Other Hand”, which means “On the other hand”
• PPL= from English people. Translation – personal
• PVT= abbreviation for private. In “private” Portuguese, personal, particular.
• ROTFL= from the English “Rolling on the Floor Laughing”, which means “rolling on the floor with laughter”
• TGIF= Thank God it's Friday
• THX= View Tks
• TIA= from the English Thanks In Advance. Translation - In advance grateful. thank you in advance
• TKS= from the English "Thanks". Translation – Thank you
• TTYL= from the English “Talk To You Later”. Translation - We'll talk later
• U= from the English “you”. Translation – you
