English abbreviations: You must know these 10
English abbreviations simplify communication and are often
used in everyday life – both at home and at work. In this article we
will introduce you to 10 important abbreviations of the English language
and what they mean.
10 Essential English Abbreviations
- ASAP - AS SOON AS POSSIBLE:This widely used
abbreviation means "as soon as possible". It is used to express that
something should be done as soon or as quickly as possible.
- BRB – BE RIGHT BACK:This abbreviation is
particularly popular in the professional world. It signals that the
conversation partner or chat partner is leaving the workplace for a
moment and will be back shortly. It can be translated as "right
back".
- N/A – NOT AVAILABLE / NOT APPLICABLE:You will
find this expression mainly in forms. It is usually entered there if
no entry can be made in a field or if this is not applicable. The
translation is: "Not available" / "Not applicable".
- AKA – ALSO KNOWN AS:Translated into German,
these three letters mean “Also known as”. They are used to talk
about a person who is known by another name in addition to their
real name. Most of the time these are nicknames, such as when you
talk about your dog and say "That's Bello aka Cuddly Monster".
- FYI - FOR YOUR INFORMATION:This relatively
short combination of letters can be translated as "For your
information". Typically, the acronym meaning "By the way" is used to
notify a person of something that may be of interest to them.
- BTW - BY THE WAY:This expression is translated
into German "By the way". As the term suggests, it is best used when
you want to add something additional to your actual statement.
- THX/TNX/TX - THANKS:These three options are
available if you want to abbreviate "THANKS".
- RSVP – PLEASE REPLY:Compared to the previous
abbreviations, this one has its origins in the French language and
literally means “Répondez s'il vous plaît”. You will find this
expression especially with invitations, but also with other
letters. It can be equated with the German “UAWG – UM ANSWER wird
GEBETEN” and expresses that feedback is desired.
- CC/BCC – CARBON COPY / BLIND COPY:We know these
terms primarily from e-mail traffic. "CC" (CARBON COPY) means that
each of the recipients listed here will receive a copy of the
email. In addition, the e-mail addresses are visible to
everyone. "BCC" (BLIND COPY), on the other hand, means that the
addresses entered here remain hidden. This makes sense, for example,
if the recipients do not know each other.
- DIY - DO IT YOURSELF:These popular three
letters can be found everywhere these days. They are particularly
popular with hobby do-it-yourselfers. Translated, they mean
something like “do it yourself”. Whether indoors or outdoors - there
are no limits to creativity in DIY projects.
