To overcome language barriers, gamers nowadays mostly use the English language. Over time, certain terms have developed into abbreviations, which are still used today in professional esports. Such abbreviations are useful, for example, to facilitate communication or to ensure that information is passed on as quickly as possible in pressure situations.

AD - Attack Damage = physical damage, opposite of ability damage
ADC - Attack Damage Carry = Ranged hero with physical damage
ADR - Average damage per round = average damage per round
Afk - Away from keyboard = literally "away from the keyboard", i.e. not on the computer
AoE – Area of effect = Flächenschaden
AP - Ability power = the strength/damage of your abilities
APM – Actions per minute = keyboard & mouse actions per minute

Bg - bad game = bad game
Bm - bad manners = inappropriate behavior
BR - Battle-Royale = game genre with a given number of players and map, the last survivor wins
Buff
- beneficial effect = a beneficial effect eg healing
Buff - the upgrading of a game element

Carry = a player who leads his team to victory
Cd - cooldown = cooldown of an ability
Cc - Crowd control = Abilities that change the opponent's movement state
CTF - Capture the Flag = game mode in which a flag must be captured

Dc - disconnect = Disconnection
DD - Damage Dealer = a hero or champion that deals a lot of damage
Debuff - harmful effect = a harmful effect eg decreases attack speed
DLC – Downloadable Content = additional content for video games
DPS - damage per second = damage per second
Dm - deathmatch = game mode where the team or player with the most kills wins

Exp - expirience = experience gained by completing quests or missions

F2P – Free-to-Play = free games
Ff – forfeit = give up a game
FGC – Fighting Game Community = online community for fighting games
FOV - Field of View = field of view of the player
FPS – First Person Shooter = First Person Shooter like CS:GO or COD
Ftw – for the win = to emphasize one thing e.g. esports.com ftw

HP - hit points = life points
He - high explosive grenade = mainly used in CS:GO, high explosive grenade

IGL - ingame leader = a kind of captain who leads the team with his announcements
Ign - in game name = the name in a video game
Imba - imbalanced = when one hero is too strong compared to others

- Kill/Death Ratio = the ratio of kills and deaths

L2p – learn to play = a provocation, “learn to play”
Lag
= delayed data transfer from the server
Leet – Elite = the elite, often abbreviated to 1337
M
Meta - most effective tactic available = the most effective tactic you can currently play
MMO - Massively Multiplayer Online = Games for a large player base, independent of genre
MOBA – Multiplayer Online Battle Arena = teams consisting of heroes compete against each other in an arena, e.g. LoL or Dota 2
Mod - Modification = extensions or improvements for games

N1 – nice one = very good, you did well
Nade – grenade = short for grenade
Nerf
= weakening of a game element
Noob/ Newbie – Not a pro = novice/ beginner
NPC – Non-Player Character = characters controlled by the computer
Ns - nice shot = commonly used in CS:GO, "that was a good shot"
Nt - nice try = good attempt to cheer up other players
O
Oom - out of mana = Player signals that he has no more mana
On – overpowered = siehe Imba

P2W - Pay-to-Win = Players who deposit money have an advantage
Pug – Pick
-Up-Group = a group of randomly assembled players

- Player vs. Environment = Player fights against NPCs
PvP
- Player vs. Player = Player fights against other players

QTE - Quick-Time-Event = Intermediate scenes in video games where players have to press certain combinations of keys quickly

Rez - Ressurect = Ask for a resuscitation
RNG – random number generator = random factor
RPG - Role-Playing Game = Role-playing games like The Wichter or Assassin's Creed
RTS – Real-Time Strategy = Real-time strategy games like Company of Heroes

S&D – Search and Destroy = Game mode in COD called Search & Destroy
SIM – simulation = simulations like FIFA or racing games
Supp - Support Role = role in MOBAs, supports the AD carry
