Social media abbreviations are part of everyday digital life. And abbreviations have various advantages. I always like to remember the song "MFG" by the Fantastischen Vier. There the subject is skilfully mocked with irony, but in the end it was a mega hit for the guys from Stuttgart. Why? Because abbreviations are popular, not only in everyday digital life, but everywhere. You save time and make communication more compact. You can exchange ideas more quickly and don't have to waste time with complex designations. Simply put the appropriate abbreviation in the room and everyone immediately knows what it's about. But back to the social media abbreviations: which ones are important, which ones do you simply have to know?
Know more and be better than the rest
First of all: there are certainly many more social media abbreviations than the ones I list in this article. You really don't need to know them all.
However, this is about the (also) most important social media abbreviations in my opinion, which is why the infographic attracted attention in the first place. Please don't be overwhelmed by the first impression: yes, it is extremely overloaded and yes, you don't find your way around immediately.
But it is also “only” about social media abbreviations. For example, if you know what “ KPI ” stands for and if you don’t have a clue when you talk about “ CTA ”, you will cut a much better figure at the next meeting.
Useful information compact at a glance
And from this perspective, the infographic on the 40 most important social media abbreviations is perfect. It provides a very quick overview once you've spent a few seconds with it.
In times of Facebook and Co., we are a bit more used to media overload than we used to be. That's not to say you shouldn't be clutter -free when creating infographics.
But it provides some understanding and as long as the really important social media abbreviations are clearly recognizable, an infographic like this definitely serves its purpose in my opinion. What's more, I would even see them as a teaching tool, hanging right in the classroom for people who are "learning" about social media.
Not all social media abbreviations fit
Curiously, this infographic also contains abbreviations that are actually not social media abbreviations. So “ SEO ” has nothing directly to do with social media, and “ISP” isn't really something you only encounter in social media either.
Also potentially confusing: abbreviations such as "SM", which clearly stands for "Social Media" in English-speaking countries. In this country, with "SM" you have a few other options for using this abbreviation.
The infographic comes from the English-speaking world, which is why it is ultimately clear that not all abbreviations are always used in exactly the same way here. But: many of the listed social media abbreviations also work for us, which is why the infographic is ultimately an almost perfect teaching tool.
