10 acronyms used on the Internet that you should know
Did you know that ASAP is the acronym for "As Soon As Possible" ("As soon as possible" in Spanish)? And that "LOL" is the acronym for "Laughing Out Load", which means "Laugh out loud"?
The Internet is evolving at an unstoppable
rate. Even for that separate species that they call ' digital
natives ' and that arrived with a modem under their arm,
an astonishing perseverance is required if someone wants to be
up to date with everything that happens in that immense alternative
world that exists on the Internet.
Social networks and new consumer trends have
made instantaneity a symbol of today's Internet. All
things on the web are born, go viral and die in an
extremely short space of time to make way for those that will replace
them and will be replaced. Hardly anyone remembers blogs anymore
or conceives of an Internet without the almighty Google; In
the last twenty years (since the Internet began to spread globally) we
have experienced several different versions of the web and
the use that is given to them has gone from one extreme to the other
during that transition.
Due to this frenetic pace that has been imposed on us, it is easy for people to get lost in the many details, protocols and words that have appeared and disappeared. In order to lend a hand to those people who feel disoriented and lost, we offer you a small dictionary of the most common acronyms that you will find on the Internet:
ASAP: Acronym for " As Soon As Possible ", "As soon as possible" in Spanish. This expression was already used in the military field before and was extended to other fields.
AKA: " Also Known As ", in Spanish "Also known as". It is usually used to list the nicknames or aliases by which a person is known, although it is also used for movies, books, places, events... many of these are usually named with acronyms such as ' Game of Thrones ' (GoT) or ' Star Wars ' (SW).
LOL: Acronym for " Laughing Out Loud ", to laugh out loud. It is common to see it used as a sarcastic expression.
FYI: Acronym for " For your information ", that is, "For your information".
GIYF: Acronym for " Google Is Your Friend ", translated into Spanish as "Google is your friend". Although it has been lost a bit because Google has gained a lot of popularity over the last few years, used as an answer to a stupid or obvious question that could have been easily solved with a Google search, it emerged as an updated version of the acronym RTFM, “ Read the fucking manual ”, which stands for can be translated as "Read the damn manual" and was used in similar situations.
JIC: Acronym for "Just In Case " ("Just in case").
OMG: Acronym for " Oh My God! ", that is, "Oh, my God!". An expression of surprise or disbelief that is very common to see on social networks.
WTF?: It is the acronym for " What The Fuck? ", English expression to show stupefaction, astonishment or indignation.
FTW: Stands for " For the win ". It is used to express enthusiasm for something and is sometimes used as an alternative to WTF because its acronyms are opposites.
XOXO: It is usually used as a farewell to send kisses and hugs.
