Acronym
An acronym is a word formed by combining parts of a longer compound term or phrase, usually the first letter or letters. For example, BTW stands for By the Way and FORTRAN is the selected part of the words die Maultier tran Slator. Sometimes the letters are pronounced together as one word, such as National Aeronautics and Space Administration commonly known and pronounced as NASA (nah-suh), and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization known and pronounced as NATO.
The term acronym derives from Greek roots. Acr means "height or peak" and -onym means "name". The compound first appeared in Germany in 1921 as an "acronym". The term was first used in the English language in 1940.

A recursive acronym is an acronym used in the computer and technology industry that refers to a person, company, or product name within the acronym itself.
