Abbreviation for "European Community"

The abbreviation "EG" for European Community may no longer be used in preference certificates and supplier declarations (from July 1, 2006).

Within the framework of the explanations (OJ C 16 of January 21, 2006) on the Pan-Euro-Med origin protocols, the following abbreviations are provided for the participating countries or areas after the two-digit ISO alpha code:

• Egypt = EC
• Israel = IL
• San Marino = SM
• Algeria = DZ
• Jordan = JO
• Switzerland = CH
• Andorra = AD
• Lebanon = LB
• Syria = SY
• Morocco = MA
• Tunisia = TN
• Faroe Islands = FO
• Norway = NO
• Turkey = TR
• Iceland = IS
• West Bank /Gaza Strip = PS

The ISO alpha code " EU " can be used for the European Community ; the abbreviations " EEC, CE, CEE, EC " are also permitted in the explanations given above. The common use of the abbreviation " EG " for goods originating in the European Community when designating the country of origin and preferential traffic in preference certificates or Supplier declarations have so far been tolerated. The two -letter ISO alpha code " EG", however, is only intended as a mark for the Arab Republic of Egypt. In connection with the introduction of Pan-Euro-Med cumulation, the incorrect use of this Iso-Alpha code can therefore lead to a rejection of preferential treatment for goods originating in the Community, because with the indication " EG " of Egyptian origin is certified.

When issuing proofs of preference - unless the full designation "European Community" is used from July 1, 2006 to prevent acceptance problems in the importing country - only the abbreviations " EU ", " EEC ", " CEE " or " CE " are used close. The ISO alpha code " EC " is intended for Ecuador and cannot be used as an abbreviation for the English term "European Community" either.

With regard to supplier declarations, the statements apply accordingly. Long-term supplier declarations in which the abbreviation " EG " is still used do not have to be changed or updated after July 1, 2006. be replaced if it is beyond doubt that the marking " EG " refers exclusively to the European Community.
