An abbreviation shortens something. Such an abbreviation can, for example, be a shorter way than the normal one or a shorter spelling of a word. A hiker goes straight across the meadow instead of following the road with a curve, or a car driver knows a secret path through a residential area. This will get you from one place to another faster.
One can also speak of an abbreviation in a figurative sense. If you don't do something the way it should be, you're taking a shortcut. He cuts the time or effort.
What is an abbreviation in words?
Most of the time, when you think of an abbreviation, you think of a word that hasn't been spelled out in full. People often find it too tedious or tedious to write a long word. Or they want to save space, for example in a printed book. As you read, you need to know what the abbreviation means.
The abbreviation for the word abbreviation itself is “abbr.”. Such abbreviations end with a period. Sometimes you leave out letters, but write one more from the end of the word: Dr. is the abbreviation for Doctor.
If you abbreviate several words, you often only write the first letters. For example: ARD for Working Group of German Broadcasting Corporations, or ZDF for Second German Television, or ETH for Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. The names of political parties are also abbreviated as follows: SPD for the Social Democratic Party of Germany or ÖVP for the Austrian People's Party. Abbreviations of such names do not have a dot at the end.
But abbreviations aren't always good for readers. You may not know
the meaning of the abbreviation. The most common are:
etc. for "and so on", in Switzerland also etc. for etcetera, which also
means "and so on",
e.g. B. for "for example",
especially for "above all",
ie for "that means",
ca. for "circa", ie: approximately, that means "roughly".
In mathematics and physics, many abbreviations are used for units of measurement. They are written without a period: km for kilometers, m for meters, kg for kilograms. In scientific subjects there are abbreviations that only experts know and need. While abbreviations make reading less fluid, there is less to write about.
